A review of workers’ compensation statistics found that more than half of all workers’ compensation injuries occurred to employees who have been at their job less than two years.
It should come as no surprise that less experienced workers have a heightened risk of an on-the-job injury, but the review by the Workers Compensation Research Institute found that workers with less than two years of experience accounted for 54% of workers’ compensation injuries during the studied period (2022-2024). Despite only representing roughly one-third of the workforce, this group accounted for more than half of all injuries.
New or inexperienced workers face several unique challenges on the jobsite. Some reasons they have an elevated injury risk include:
- Less familiarity with workplace dangers
- Less familiarity with best safety practices
- They may be assigned riskier tasks that more experienced workers no longer want to perform
- May be overworked, stressed or rushing to perform tasks due to their inexperience and desire to keep up with the demands of their new role

The vast majority of employees are protected by workers’ compensation benefits from their first day on the job, so let us get you the compensation you deserve.
Work Injuries For New Hires
Let’s take a closer look at some additional data from the WCRI report. According to the data:
- Roughly 40% of work injuries occurred during the employees’ first year with an employer.
- 16% of injuries occurred within the first three months of employment.
- The industries most affected were the restaurant and entertainment industries, where workers with less than two years of tenure accounted for 64% of injuries.
- That same injury share was 60% in the agriculture, forestry and fishing industry and 59% in the construction industry.
