A new wave of proposals officially became law on August 1, and one of the major changes involves significant improvements for warehouse workers.
According to the bill, employers will now be required to provide each warehouse worker with a written description of any quotas they are required to meet. Employers will also need to provide additional details about how the employee’s work is measured and any actions that may be taken in event they fail to meet their quota.
Additional changes in the bill include:
- A company cannot fire or take adverse action against an employee for failing to meet a quota that has not been officially disclosed to them.
- Companies can’t implement productivity quotas that prevent workers from taking breaks.
- The state can open an investigation if a company has an injury rate that is 30 percent or higher compared to the industry standard.
- Current and former employees can bring a civil suit against any business that violates these laws.
Amazon Workers Rejoice
Many Amazon warehouse workers are celebrating the new bill, as a number of the company’s warehouses in Minnesota previously had injury rates far above the national average. One report found that the rate of injury in Minnesota Amazon warehouses was four times that of all Minnesota industries.
Hopefully the new changes will help to keep workers safe, but we expect Amazon to find ways to navigate the changes and keep, what they call “performance metrics” at a very high level. In the meantime, if you or someone you know was injured in a warehouse accident, make sure that you get the compensation you deserve. The team at Hey Workers is ready to help build your case and argue it until you get the compensation you deserve.
Even if you’re not sure if you have a case, it never hurts to give our team a call. As we’ve said on the blog in the past, we work on a contingent basis, meaning we get paid when you win an award. We’re not going to take every case and stick you with a bill. Instead, if we believe you have a legitimate claim to compensation, we will fight tooth and nail for what you deserve. We have your best interest at heart because when you win, we all win.
